WCO-WTO Data Analytics Workshop for Niger and Togo Customs

Lomé, Togo

I co-facilitated a WCO workshop on data analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Customs administrations of Niger and Togo, held in Lomé, Togo, from 5 to 7 October 2026.

This was the first cooperation activity implemented under the WCO-WTO Framework Cooperation Agreement, signed in January 2025. The workshop formed the second part of a capacity-building programme that began in 28 September, bringing together 10 officials from the two administrations.

The workshop covered:

  • WCO tools, instruments and initiatives on data analytics
  • Practical use cases of data analytics and AI in Customs
  • Foundations of AI and machine learning
  • Data quality and governance
  • Hands-on training on AI-HS, an AI-based HS classification model developed under the WCO BACUDA Project

Working in national groups, Niger and Togo Customs applied the WCO AI/ML Readiness Self-Assessment Tool to assess their current readiness and identify areas for further development. Participants also shared their experiences and discussed how data analytics and AI can support more effective and modern Customs operations.
